Resize your LO for web posting

There are a few ways to resize your layouts before posting to online galleries.  Here are a couple of helpful tips for you.  The first one is the one I use the most, but I must confess, I haven’t tried the 2nd one yet.  But the next time I’m ready to post a LO online, I’m definitely going to give it a try.   (NOTE:  These are for photoshop)

OPTION ONE:  In the layers palette, right click on a layer and click flatten image.  The resize your image.  In PSE10, click Image, resize, image size (or alt+ctrl+I) (In Photoshop CS4, click Image>Image Size).  Set the width at 600 pixels, which should automatically change the height to 600 pixels.  Make sure the constrain proportions box is checked.  Also make sure the scale styles is checked too so your shadows don’t get all funky.  The 600×600 pixels will shrink your LO to 2 inches by 2 inches.  At this point, press ctrl+zero to reset the image to fill your screen.

In PSE10 – click Enhance>Unsharp Mask (In Photoshop CS4>filter>sharpen>unsharp mas): Set Amount to 150%, Radius to .3 and Threshold to zero.

Click file>save for web (alt+shift+ctrl+S).  Chose JPEG medium from the drop down menu next to preset.  Need further sharpening?  Click on the right arrow make next to the “Quality” to get the scrub line, then scrub until you get to a maximum of around 125K.  Why?  Because most websites have a restriction on the size of the document you can upload.  Most are restricted to 125K.  So don’t go over that.

OPTION TWO:  Here’s one other option that Mama_Pajama posted at Scrap Orchard.  I just tested it and I’m going to be switching to this method.  It makes it sharpen then the unsharpen filters, but there are a couple of more steps.

Resize your LO to 600×600 pixels (like above).  Then duplicate the LO two times.  On the top layer, run the high pass filter with a radius of 0.4 pixel.  It will be gray in color.  Then change the blending mode to LINEAR LIGHT.  Adjust the opacity if it’s too sharp.

On the 2nd layer, change the blending mode to soft light then change the opacity to about 25%.  This doesn’t sharpen it, but helps give it a little more pop.

Merge the 3 layer together.  Click File>Save for Web (alt+shift+ctrl+S).  On the right hand of the screen, to the right of the “preset drop down” is a right arrow.  Click on it and Optimize to File Size.  Enter the desired file size.  Generally websites have a restriction on the size of files, so check the website you are going to upload on their max file size, but generally 125K is safe.  Then choose the “Auto Select GIF/JPEG” and click Ok, then save it.

Hope these two tidbits helped make it easier to save your LO for uploading to the web.  Perhaps create an action for it too?  If you don’t have Photoshop, maybe at a later date I’ll create an action to upload here for all of you.  I’ll have to play around with that.

Happy Scrappin!!!
